Common Household Items That Are Poisonous to Your Dog

Dogs will eat anything. Unfortunately, dogs easily poison themselves this way, often by eating common household items. We here at Peace Arch Veterinary Hospital in Surrey, British Columbia, know the most common household items that can poison your dog.

Chocolate

Chocolate contains theobromine, which is harmless to people, but poisonous to pets. White chocolate contains the least amount of theobromine, dark chocolate the most. The smaller the dog, the smaller the amount of chocolate is needed to seriously harm the dog. During Christmas, keep all presents off the floor that contain chocolate because you dog might dig into the present and eat it.

Human Medications

Most human medication is too strong for dogs. Do not leave bottles of medicine on tables, countertops, or anywhere the dog habitually searches for treats. Never give human medication to dogs. When you have overnight visitors, caution them about leaving out medication that could poison your dog.

Batteries

Most batteries come in easy-to-gulp sizes, especially hearing aid batteries. Do not place old batteries in trash cans or recycle bins where dogs can easily poke their noses in.

Alcoholic Beverages

Dogs are attracted to the strong smell of alcohol and will sample it. Often, they drink all they can get a hold of. Unfortunately, dogs have a far less tolerance to alcohol than people do, and even one serving can fatally poison your dog. Try not to drink right before bed, because you are more likely to leave a half-finished glass right where the dog can get it.

Find an Emergency Vet Now

The best time to find an emergency vet is before your dog needs to visit one. Never assume that your vet will handle your dog’s emergency 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Ask if he or she provides emergency services.
