Heat Stroke in Dogs & Cats

Prevent Your Pet from Overheating

Prevent Your Pet from Overheating

Pet dehydration and heatstroke are about much more than your pet being too thirsty or too hot. It can actually lead to many undesirable issues, like unwanted emergency animal hospital bills and, sadly, the death of your beloved pet. Fortunately, these issues are preventable with just a few steps provided by us at Peace Arch Veterinary Hospital your animal care specialists in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.

Keep Them Indoors while You’re Away

Imagine being locked out of the house when the sun is beating down on you – waiting hours for your humans to come home. It’s not only uncomfortable – it’s downright dangerous. Keep your furry friend inside while you’re gone. If they must be outside, be sure that they have adequate shade and plenty of water. If possible, provide a small pool that they can dip their toes in as well.

Avoid Walks in the Middle of the Day

No matter how much you love being in the sun, it can be dangerous for your pet. They “sweat” through the pads on their feet to regulate their body temperature. Walking on concrete, pavement, or really hot grass can impede their heat regulation. Try to take your walks earlier or later in the day to prevent this from happening.

Leave Your Pet At Home

Taking your pet with you to run errands might seem like a fun idea…until you have to go indoors without them. Leaving your pet in the car means that they are trapped in high heat without any ventilation. If you’re going to have to go in anywhere, leave your pet at home.

Keep Water Close

Whether you’re in your yard, at the park, inside your home, or outdoors hiking, keep water handy. Let your pet take constant water breaks to stay hydrated.
